Major Paratha looked at the photograph of his family that was on his desk, his three children standing in front of him and his wife. How would he feel if it were one of his children who had been injured? Ahmadi and his team had delivered the warheads late last night or early this morning. Paratha used a secure line to call him. Ahmadi answered immediately.

“Ahmadi, your wife wants you to call her. Your daughter was injured at school and has been taken to the hospital.”

“Shamina tends to overreact to anything involving the children. I’ll phone her. I’m sorry she’s bothered you.”

“I’m just passing the information along. What you do with it is your decision.”

“We’ve delivered the container to the base. We slept in and had a late breakfast. Nahib and another of my men will return the truck and security vehicle, probably sometime tomorrow. They’re going to spend the day in Karachi before heading back to the base. Believe it or not, Nahib’s never been there. Remember that I’m taking some time off.”

Paratha leaned back in his chair, his fingers interlocked behind his head. He recalled that Ahmadi had requested a week off following the delivery to Masroor Air Force Base in Karachi. Ahmadi’s wife only said he would be away for several days, presumably on the assignment. She would not know the assignment was almost completed. Where was he now going for several days? Was Ahmadi having an affair? This wouldn’t be the first time a soldier had lied to his wife, saying he was on a top-secret mission and could not be contacted. However, Ahmadi did not seem like someone who would do that. By all appearances, he was a devout Muslim who loved his wife and children.

He swung his chair around to face his computer screen and pulled up the daily absence report. Over forty soldiers were listed as absent, including Ahmadi, Nahib, and their security team. Almost all of the absentees were involved in the deployment. Only a few had returned to base, and those men had made trips to and from bases in close proximity to DGK. The remainder would be back by the end of the day tomorrow, except for those who had requested time off. Nothing looked overly suspicious. He would wait until tomorrow afternoon and check the attendance reports again.
